About Badass Asian Women
What We Do?
Badass Asian Women is a club of Metro Atlanta Asian American women using our collective strength to bring positive change to the local community.
Through in-person events, an online forum and a group annual service project, our goal is to show the impact that we can have as a group, while inspiring our members to become more civically engaged.
Han Pham
Badass Asian Women Founder
Han moved to Atlanta for her husband’s job a decade ago, with just one friend and a new baby. Working remotely for her job, she felt really isolated and disconnected, both on a physical level and in her soul. So, she made a change, left her job and started to focus on working locally with organizations that spoke to her heart. She joined the board of the Global Village Project, a school that restarts education for refugee girls in Decatur (you can read her blog article about why GVP here); she’s on the board of The Lola, a women’s club in Atlanta (more about Han and The Lola here); and she now works for Her Term, which helps women run for office in Georgia. She was also named an Obama Leader in 2024.
While making all these connections, she was meeting some amazing people, and especially Asian women who were totally badass. So they made a secret Facebook group for Asians in Decatur for mahjong nights and family potlucks. And without family in Atlanta, these women became family. And with this family, she developed the Decatur Lunar New Year Festival and now the Badass Asian Women project. Watch Han’s TEDxTalk on how she discovered that harnessing her power as an Asian woman could make a difference.
Why “Badass,” You Ask?
Asian women have been culturally and socially conditioned to stay meek and modest. Stereotypes of the quiet and submissive Asian women feed into dangerous assumptions that affect our safety, career advancement, and government policies. We are Badass Asian Women when we challenge those stereotypes and cultural conditioning, when we speak our own mind, and choose for ourselves rather than putting others first. Let’s reject the shame and turn “bad” into “badass”!
Badassery, Let’s Do This.
